The third national land resource survey reveals that the city's cultivated area is 4,771.17 square kilometers, the garden area is 63.95 square kilometers, the forest area is 529.5 square kilometers, the grass area is 45.76 square kilometers, and the wetland area is 92.96 square kilometers. The urban, village, and industrial and mining land occupies 1,476.42 square kilometers, while transportation land covers 276.99 square kilometers. Additionally, waters and water conservancy facilities account for 2,747.46 square kilometers.
Water Resources Huai'an City is situated in the middle and lower reaches of the Huaihe River Basin, featuring numerous rivers and lakes, a dense water network, and favorable water resources. The South-to-North Water Diversion Project is starting to take shape. The total water resources amount to 1.877 billion cubic meters. The average annual precipitation runoff depth in the area ranges from 199 to 262.5 millimeters. Overall, surface water resources are relatively scarce, with significant year-to-year fluctuations and uneven distribution throughout the year. In contrast, groundwater resources are abundant, with substantial reserves and a large volume of transit water.
Mineral Resources Huai'an City is rich in mineral resources, including halite, mirabilite, attapulgite clay, petroleum, basalt, limestone, dolomite, geothermal energy, and mineral water. The reserves of halite, attapulgite clay, and mirabilite are the largest in the province. The proven reserves of halite ore amount to 31.596 billion tons and are primarily located in the Huai'an District, Huaiyin District, Qingjiangpu District, and Hongze District. The proven reserves of attapulgite clay total 19.6052 million tons, with the main deposits found in Xuyi County. Additionally, the proven reserves of anhydrous mirabilite ore are 679 million tons, primarily distributed in the Huaiyin District and Hongze District.
Biological Resources Huai'an City is home to 104 families, 219 genera, and 275 species of plants. Additionally, there are 82 families, 213 genera, and 674 species (including varieties) of woody plants. The native forest resources, excluding ancient and notable trees, are primarily found in the hilly and mountainous regions of Xuyi. The predominant tree species in this area are hackberry, Pistacia chinensis, sandalwood, oak, Sapium sebiferum, and mulberry, among others. Within the built-up area, there are 65 registered ancient and renowned trees. The city boasts abundant wildlife resources, with over 300 species spanning 7 groups: zooplankton, benthonic animals, fish, amphibians, reptiles, beasts, and birds.
