Huai'an Enhances the Eco-friendly and Livable Character of Its Rural Areas

Since the beginning of this year, Huai'an has focused its ecological and environmental protection work closely on the entire agricultural production chain, treating non-point source pollution across the region, upgrading infrastructure, and strengthening precise source control to highlight the eco-friendly and livable character of its rural areas.

The city seeks continuous improvement in rural water environmental quality. Focusing on key areas such as the protection of drinking water sources, agricultural non-point source pollution, and the remediation of black and odorous water bodies, Huai'an leverages a dedicated campaign for comprehensive water environment improvement to inspect and rectify various water-related risks citywide. A review was conducted on 77 rural black and odorous water bodies: Aside from 3 that were filled, the remaining 74 were monitored across low-water and high-water periods, with no recurrence of black and odorous conditions.

The city is deepening the prevention and control of livestock and poultry breeding pollution. On the basis of advancing the filing of resource utilization plans for manure and waste from large-scale livestock and poultry farms (breeders), the city launched a comprehensive inspection and remediation drive covering the construction of manure treatment facilities among small- and medium-scale breeders, including pig farms. A total of 1,242 small and medium-sized farms (breeders) were inspected citywide, uncovering 316 issues, all of which have been fully rectified.

The city continues to refine the ecological agriculture monitoring system. It continues the supervisory monitoring of tailwater from aquaculture ponds, maximizing the benefits of treatment facilities such as the "three ponds and two dams" system and the recirculating water treatment system. Coordinated efforts were made to advance farmland irrigation water quality monitoring and the development of related networks, providing data support for the control of agricultural non-point source pollution and the entry of total pollutant discharge quotas into the database. A total of 41 automatic surface water monitoring stations were built and connected to the network, achieving full coverage of automated monitoring across 11 drinking water sources at or above the county level.
