Li Qiang, Secretary of the CPC Jiangsu Committee, inspected the old government building of water transport in Huai'an.
Li Qiang, Secretary of the CPC Jiangsu Committee, inspected the construction of the Jiangsu section of the Grand Canal Cultural Belt and held a meeting to debrief the project on Sept 15.
Li visited the China Water Transport Museum, the old government building of Huai'an, Hexia ancient town and the best-preserved Qingjiang sluice on the canal, giving him a better idea of the profound culture and history of the Grand Canal.
He demanded all parties earnestly implement the instructions of President Xi Jinping on the construction of the Grand Canal Cultural Belt, make solid progress on the project and develop the Jiangsu section of the belt into a beautiful ecological corridor, a tasteful cultural corridor and an economic corridor of great benefit. Li hoped the Jiangsu section can become an exemplary and demonstrative section of the cultural belt.
Huai'an is the "capital of the canal", in the sense that it boasts many culturally rich portions of the Grand Canal. Two historical areas, one river section and five sites are included in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites listing, and the heritage area and buffer area cover more than 10,000 hectares, about one-seventh of the entire canal.
