The reconstruction and expansion project of Huai'an Lianshui International Airport started on the morning of August 19, which is a great event for Huai'an to build a comprehensive transportation hub.

Huai'an Lianshui International Airport has always maintained a good safety record and rapid growth of passenger and freight transportation since its opening in 2010. The reconstruction and expansion of the terminal will effectively enhance the support capacity of Huai'an Lianshui International Airport, and accelerate the transformation of Huai'an from a geographical center to a regional transportation center.

In recent years, Huai'an municipal government strived to promote the construction of Huai'an Lianshui International Airport into a freight hub by making full use of the supportive policies made by the provincial Party committee and the provincial government for the construction of Huai'an airport. It has airlines to more than 30 cities at home and abroad and three full cargo routes. Its handling capacity of mail and cargo exceeds 10,000 tons. Thus, Huai'an airport was successfully upgraded to an international airport. This has laid a solid foundation for the construction of a comprehensive transportation system, "a green highland and a new hub city", and an important central city in the north of the Yangtze River Delta. This project will integrate Huai'an into the "dual circulation" development pattern in which the domestic economic cycle plays a leading role while the international economic cycle remains its extension and supplement.

The project with a total investment of about 50 million yuan is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year. The total area of the new terminal is 17,600 square meters, and the annual throughput of passengers is 3 million.
