Multiple Departments in Huai'an Work Together to Care for Adolescent Spinal Health
time:2026-08-04

Scoliosis is a developmental disease with a high incidence among adolescents; the ages of 10 to 16 are the period of fastest progression and the golden window for intervention and correction. To this end, the Huai'an Municipal Disabled Persons' Federation, the Huai'an Municipal Education Bureau, and the Huai'an Municipal Health Commission collaborated to conduct scoliosis prevention screenings for 55,000 Grade 7 students across the city. AI rapid screening equipment was set up at the screening sites, completing precise imaging in just 3 seconds. A layered review mechanism was also established: students with abnormalities in the initial screening underwent a second on-site review by professionals from the Huai'an Municipal Maternal and Child Health Hospital. If abnormalities were confirmed, a notice to parents would be issued immediately to guide them to designated hospitals for further examination. This "screening-referral-diagnosis-intervention" closed-loop management system helps to curb the worsening of the condition and reduce the risk of disability at the source.

To effectively reduce the financial burden on families of students in economic difficulty, Huai'an has opened a "green channel" for adolescent spinal health, waiving registration fees and streamlining the registration process. Meanwhile, the city has precisely implemented disability prevention and assistive device subsidy policies, launching a special subsidy for orthopedic braces for scoliosis patients under 16. Families receiving subsistence allowance or facing other difficulties are entitled to fully free fitting services, while other families can receive a subsidy of up to 1,200 yuan for fitting services at designated institutions.

Huai'an will establish a fixed free screening service point at the municipal comprehensive service center for the disabled to provide normalized adolescent scoliosis screening services. It will continue to deepen departmental collaboration, improve screening, follow-up, and intervention mechanisms, carry out campus and community science popularization, precisely implement various rehabilitation policies benefiting people with disabilities, and strive to protect the healthy growth of adolescents citywide.
