Eight Place Names of Huai'an Enter the List of Provincial-Level Place-Name Cultural Heritage

Recently, the 2025 List of Provincial-Level Place-Name Cultural Heritage was announced, and eight place names of Huai'an, including the ancient well of Zhou Enlai's former residence, were selected for the list in the categories of water conservancy facilities and transportation facilities. Since Jiangsu Province launched its provincial-level identification of place-name cultural heritage in 2022, a total of 41 place names of Huai'an have been included in the provincial list, covering multiple categories such as ancient cities, ancient towns, ancient streets and alleys, ancient bridges, and water conservancy facilities.

In recent years, Huai'an City has adhered to the concept of "promoting culture for people's welfare and better governance" and insisted on "respecting history, preserving roots, upholding integrity, and propelling innovation," systematically promoting the cultural protection and inheritance of historical place names. The city formulated the Huai'an Downtown Old Place Name Protection Plan, which includes more than 900 old place names, and has been implementing classified and precise protection measures; 57 towns have completed their place-name plans; efforts have been made to promote the revitalization and utilization of old place names, with 38 place names with historical significance, such as Jiaolonggang, Jiaochang, and Zhuanjing, being reused for naming roads, communities, and public service facilities. In addition, monuments and inscriptions have been in place on the original sites of historical streets and lanes, such as Fuma Lane, Dutianmiao Street, and Kongxin Street, to strengthen the city's memory markers. Meanwhile, Huai'an pays attention to the compilation and dissemination of place-name culture, with A History of Huai'an Place Names published to comprehensively showcase the historical context and cultural charm of the place names of Huai'an.
