Recently, Jiangsu Province announced the list of its eighth batch of traditional villages, and four villages in Huai'an are on the list. With this addition, the city now has 21 provincially recognized traditional villages.
Huai'an attaches equal importance to conservation and development, taking active measures to avoid static preservation. While maintaining original village layouts, historical buildings, and cultural environment, the city has actively introduced boutique accommodations and cultural study tours. These initiatives transform underutilized spaces into vibrant community assets, creating virtuous cycles of village revitalization and economic empowerment, and truly embody the historical authenticity, the integrity of the cultural landscape, and the continuity of life.
Huai'an emphasizes both cultural inheritance and innovation, aiming to safeguard the cultural roots. Its systematic documentation of intangible cultural heritage—including village history, folklore, and traditional techniques—forms the foundation for living heritage transmission through village history museums, craft workshops, and folk activities. Meanwhile, it encourages the use of modern design and digital technology for the innovative expression of traditional culture, as well as the development of contemporary cultural and creative products and immersive experience programs, so as to give new life to ancient culture and attract younger generations to heritage appreciation.
Huai'an also implements a distinctive "one-village-one-strategy" approach, ensuring customized preservation. Through in-depth research on the resource endowment, characteristic advantages, and challenges of each traditional village, the city formulates conservation plans and implementation road maps fully tailored to each traditional village's current situation and preservation needs. This data-driven methodology guarantees that the conservation measures and development paths are tailored to the reality of each village, maximizing the villages' unique value and potential for sustainable development.
