Huai'an Advances Protection and Utilization of Germplasm Resources

In recent years, Huai'an City has continuously advanced the construction and management of germplasm resource banks to enhance the competitiveness of the seed industry, ensured income increase for farmers, safeguarded regional food security, and promoted sustainable development of agriculture. At present, we have built the first crop germplasm resource preservation bank of northern Jiangsu and have bred over 100 new varieties with influence throughout the province and even the whole country. Among them, "Huai'an Rice No. 5" has been promoted to an area of over 15 million mu, and it is currently the japonica rice variety with the largest planting area and longest planting period in Jiangsu province. Besides, the highest yield of 827.5 kg per mu of "Huai'an Wheat No. 33" has broken the records in Jiangsu Province, and the wheat variety has the largest promotion area in the North region of Jiangsu Province. All these are attributable to efforts in three aspects.

First, we have protected the gene bank. In the provincial crop germplasm resource bank of Huai'an Academy of Agricultural Sciences, the stored germplasm is numbered according to items and can be checked by scanning the code and used at any time. The bank preserves over 8,800 copies of major crop germplasm such as rice, wheat, soybean, corn, rapeseed, and watermelon. Second, we have attached importance to quality germplasm. We have obtained excellent germplasm through collection, identification, and evaluation. Through complementary matching, we selected the best germplasm over and over again, and it took us about ten years to obtain the improved varieties. Third, we have ensured the continuous development of germplasm resources. Based on big data technology, we have comprehensively carried out a census of local characteristic germplasm resources, established different database systems, and built an information platform for the protection and utilization of germplasm resources, while tracking and utilizing the specific genes to avoid the loss of superior genes. Take the "Huai'an Rice" series as an example. Up to now, the rice varieties have been planted in over 35 million mu, with a cumulative yield exceeding 2 billion kilograms and a cumulative increase in economic benefits exceeding RMB 4.8 billion.
